Abstract

A method for the Spectro-photometric determination of Hg(II) is developed by using 3,4-Dihydroxybenzaldehyde isonicotinoylhydrazone (3,4-DHBINH) as complexing agent. Hg(II) reacts with 3,4-DHBINH in the pH range 4 to 7 to form orange colored solution. The complex shows maximum absorption in a buffer solution of pH 6.0. λmax is 440 nm. The composition of the complex is 1:1(M:L). Beer’s law is obeyed in the range 2.005 µg/ml to 10.029µg/ml. The molar absorptivity and Sandel sensitivity are calculated as 1.02 x 104 Lmol-1 cm-1 0.01210 µg/cm2 respectively. The method has been successfully applied for Hg(II) determination in water samples and selected fertilizers.
